Paper Press

I was asked for photos of my paper press, I recently talked about in a video HERE.
My Husband made it for me info as best as I could measure follows:

Frame is 14 ½ x 12 ½ and 10 ½ tall; it is made from ¾ plywood

The dowels are about 1” round

The actual press plate (plywood) measures 11 ½ x 8 ¾

the washer like thing on the bolt bottom

handle on the bolt

top

underneath the bottom

The Bolt has a handle on top, it was JB Weld’ed, allowing it to screw up and down. On the bottom of the bolt is a round piece of metal (almost washer like) about 3 inches in round. It is not attached to the press plate, it does press down onto the plate. The JB Weld, did not hold the washer thing on the bottom, so I used some Gorilla Glue on it and it seems to be holding just fine.

So there we go, I hope this helps

Dye'in to Bind

I was recently in a Natural Dye & Book Binding workshop, instructed by Delaney Smith of Delaney Smith Studio. It was a full day of dying fun and learning some simple binding techniques for our dyed papers.

Y’all know I’ve made a few many journals using the pamphlet stitch, staples, glue, hair bands and whatnotage but this was . . . My first time dying (lol) and my first time Japanese Stab(ing more LoL). Now some of my fellow workshopp’ers (I’m just full of ‘em today) had not done any binding before and some had.

Delaney fixed up three different dye baths for us, explained some of the ins and outs and different stuffs about using natural stuff in dying. One of the main things was to record what we used and the various notes to keep when experimenting (spear mints). You see if you want to try and repeat an outcome, you need to know how you got there.

Here are a few photos from the workshop

and TWO videos can be found here and here, of the little books I made at the workshop. I’m sure y’all will see some dying and stab’in videos in the near ta far futures.

Mural Collaboration - Texas Children's Hospital

I was asked to join in a collaboration project, one in which we all would be painting various images. To benefit the new TexasChildren’s Hospital in The Woodlands, expected to open in 2017. So yeah, during a brief gathering of some fellow artist and the spear head, Vickie McMillan, I was persuaded that I was capable of doing this.

Yes I say persuaded, I mean like many artist I’m not always sure that I can paint something. . . really me paint a real flower or a butterfly! My cohorts from Conroe Art League were all pretty sure and jumped at the chance. I lingered, maybe it was my need to be boosted up, you know make myself the center of attention and I’m not saying it wasn’t. But a bit of influence was needed for me to say Okay, I’ll give it a try. Vickie assured me us that if anything needed tweaking she would handle it. In fact we should more or less expect it as this is what would bring cohesion to the piece, whose parts were being painted by professional artist and children alike.

We were to choose an image from a group she had for us of native Texas plants, birds and butterflies. We were to paint using acrylics, in a very basic style – no details, no background. She would scan our painted image, digitally size and perhaps add a paint stroke or enhance the colors and then stich the images together into a 65 foot mural. This mural would be not only for beauty, but to help distract ill children from pains and such during long stays at the hospital or physical therapy. Within the woodsey / fieldy nature scene there would be hidden objects, a sort of I spy or seek and find, to have things like balls or see-saws or other playground images.

Our canvas to use was a plastic wallpaper of sorts . . . highly textured, the background was to remain white and depending the size of the piece you chose you could fit one, two or even three of the same image on it. I picked two different butterflies, I mean why not I had not painted one before – A C K – what was I thinking! Oh you want to see, here is the video.

Mexican Bluewing

Pipevine Swallowtail

Now mind you during the filming I had a few issues, not just staying in camera frame but while actually filming my laptop decided it was time to install windows 10, NO MATTER how many times I had said no before, it was going to install. So after the 3-4 hour installation, I moved my lap top into the house . . . my power cord that had been love bitten over a year ago, that I had fixed and then Johnny had fixed more better decided that it had had enough . . . it broke completely in two. And nonetheless it’s all working again, thank God.

Participating artist are to invited to the opening / unveiling of the mural and {cross fingers} I’ll be there and more crossing of fingers I’ll do a post about that and remember to come back to add that link here. And without further ado

Artist Block Thingy

aka #CACTrashToTreasure #ArtistBlock thingy Video that went live today. . . so I can’t stand waiting for y’all to ask about the “Story” of this Artist Block . . . SO I’m just gonna tell y’all

Once upon a time there was a princess my Great Aunt Penny, she loved driving around in her big fancy car. She would just cruise by day, by night, by herself or with friends. Driving was just plain fun. One day when Great Aunt Penny was driving the weather turned, it turned bad, really real bad, so she slowed down. A feat that was not exactly easy for her Lead Footed self. But slow down she did and as it turned out it was a darn good (if not better’est) thing. . .

There she was, a young single lady in a terrible storm on a lonely dirt road out in the middle of the woods (can y’all hear the creepy music?) when all of a sudden, quick as lightening, something went dashing out in front of her car . . . bam she slammed on the breaks real fast, as fast as lightening even. And the car spun around and bomped into a tree. Well it least it didn’t plow into the tree, it was just a gentle little bomp. Great Aunt Penny was a little shook up and when she regained herself, she looked around trying to see if she could spot what that thing was that ran in front of her car. . .

And there it was, sopping wet and shivering under a nearby bush. Great Aunt Penny opened her car door and the little thing came a running. . . straight into her lap!

Yep, it was a little white doggie with black spots. Well Great Aunt Penny went to laughing and the dog went to licking her face and she laughed all the harder and proclaimed, "You're so lucky I didn't run over you and I'm so lucky that I didn't spin right down that deep gully."

And there y’all have it, the “Story” about Great Aunt Penny and her dog Lucky . . . oh and her Daddy owned a copper mine (sorta like a Button Mine) . . . Lucky Penny, copper it all works out for the best, don’t ya think?
