Our Art Community loss our friend Raine Phoenix, Oct. 18, 2016. In honor of Raine I am posting here the HOT mess ART gang interview I did for the gang newsletter in July of 2015. Raine we love you and miss you.

 Spotlight Corner

We are happy to present our first member Spotlight, RainePhoenix from Massachusetts.She loves the changing seasons and lives in a house that her family built in 1847. Raine’s grandfather was born in the home and as a child she spent a lot of time there with her grandparents, even then it “felt like home.”

Raine currently does her arting from a comfy recliner, but plans on reorganizing her studio space. She loves acrylic paint and also dabbles with watercolors of various types along with colored pencils. She’s happy with a diet Coke, Word Search puzzles and has been known to “go on scarf-knitting binges.” Just don’t ask about her washi tape collection.

Raine enjoys music some favorites are Rufus Wainwright, Shinedown, Jethro Tull, Green Day and most classical music, especially Mozart. She gave up TV about 3 years ago, but likes the occasional DVD, comedies, classic chick flicks and superhero movies (Robert Downey Jr.). Raine LOVES Trivial Pursuit, when she can get someone else to play. She appreciates ALL art and finds it inspiring even if she doesn’t understand it, it’s the experience that stays with her. Raine’s preferred surface to art on is one found in a journal so without further ado we present the delightful RainePhoenix.

Please tell us about your art journaling; I've been doing it since my very first class with Kelly Kilmer in late December of 2007. Since we made our own journals for that class, I have almost always made the journals I work in. I've made about 50, 45 or so of which I have filled. I get annoyed when I can't get a nice watercolor journal in portrait form. Another good reason to make my own! My art is very eclectic. I don't really have a "style" or have any particular topics or themes. I do have a lot of vintage photo collage sheets that I like to use now and then. I suppose that my art sort of reflects my own life at the time. I really love the freedom of art journaling and that there is no "wrong" way to do it!

After you finish a journal spread, do you see things about it that are relevant to your life or history that you didn’t realize while you were working on it? Absolutely! It happens a lot. I work very intuitively, so I'm not always aware of why I'm making the choices that I make. Frequently in hindsight, things become obvious references to my life and/or what is going on around me.

Is there a non-art thing that you do, that seems to give you art ideas? I am a voracious reader! Last year I decided to keep track of them and it turned out that I had read 239 books. I also read a lot of art magazines and didn't include those in my book list. So far this year I am on my 89th book. Reading takes me to other worlds, other realms. How can that not inspire me? I read a lot of fantasy and paranormal novels. They inspire me to take my art out of the box. There are no limits to what I can try, if I so choose.

Do you have a specific routine for doing your work? I try to make art every day. I used to go up to my studio around midnight and work/play until about 4:00 am. My friends and I used to joke that I got up "at the crack of noon!" Unfortunately, I've had to modify my hours and haven't yet found a new schedule. I'm hoping that once I've made my studio more comfortable and functional, I'll fall into some sort of routine.

Do you ever procrastinate, and if so why do you suppose that is? Oh, I am a very gifted procrastinator! Hence, all the reading! I think that it's the fear that I won't know what to do, that "blank page syndrome" that affects so many of us artists. But I love making backgrounds so I guess that most of my procrastination is fear-based. Fear that my art won't be "good enough." I try not to compare myself to other artists but it's difficult when the Internet makes finding other artists so easy. But I will even pull out my own previous journals and feel like I can no longer produce work like I had in the past.

Do you have a favorite artist and What about them do you admire? Monet! His water lilies are amazing. I was fortunate to have seen some in person a few years ago. I had gone to an exhibit with a friend. At the end of it was a gift shop but it was too crowded and I became uncomfortable. My friend suggested I go into the next room where there were benches where I could rest and wait for her. Well, as it turned out, the room held several of Monet's painting! I was overwhelmed! In person, they actually seem to glow from within. I was literally moved to tears. I just stood in front of one of them, gazing at it with tears streaming down my face. They are just such peaceful images and I'm fascinated by the fact that he was able to paint so many paintings of the same subject without the artwork becoming stale.

What type of art stuff do you collect? It might be easier to say what I DON'T collect! Actually, I tend to collect paints of all kinds, stencils (over 600! Don't judge! *wink*), washi tape (don’t ask), stamps and paper, particularly deli paper within the past year or so. I have quite a few boxes of it. I'm on the search for the "perfect" deli paper!

Dye'in to Bind

I was recently in a Natural Dye & Book Binding workshop, instructed by Delaney Smith of Delaney Smith Studio. It was a full day of dying fun and learning some simple binding techniques for our dyed papers.

Y’all know I’ve made a few many journals using the pamphlet stitch, staples, glue, hair bands and whatnotage but this was . . . My first time dying (lol) and my first time Japanese Stab(ing more LoL). Now some of my fellow workshopp’ers (I’m just full of ‘em today) had not done any binding before and some had.

Delaney fixed up three different dye baths for us, explained some of the ins and outs and different stuffs about using natural stuff in dying. One of the main things was to record what we used and the various notes to keep when experimenting (spear mints). You see if you want to try and repeat an outcome, you need to know how you got there.

it's true, I did this a week ago during Barb Owen, of How to Get Creative, Live YouTube Stream. . . she was interviewing Shannon Green, of  by Shannon Green, and those of us that were there were asked to participate if we wanted. . .

Sooooooooooo I did and some other peoples did too.  What fun it was, I also recorded and that video is up today over Here.

a Postcard

for a worthy cause in another country, Norway. I saw the post on FaceBook shared by @LWHfromMars and thought. . .

hum sounds like something I’ll like to do, so I cut my post card base and um yeah, what next??? As I was digging for my drawing pencils in my travel art bag a face from last Sept (2014) fell out and yes Eureka. That’s exactly what I want.

So I took the face #23 and redrew it onto a 4 inch by 6 inch base, with a few tiny changes. And then I grabbed my paints and voila – ta dah even

A Difference

With a twist

Dana Christiansen of Dana’s Inspirations. I have been blessed to meet and hug her in real life. She has a brilliant heart and it shows through in her delicious art work. Yep I said delicious, because her paintings and journal pages are like fresh fruit. Vibrant and tasty and when I see Dana’s stuff it just makes me happy. Her work has a special quality that shines like love. Dana has designed stamps for WhimsyStamps and taught in the Soul Food online workshop. Ok the deal on this Hop, I tell ya who tagged me (^see above Artist^), I answer 4 little questions about myself (a good topic) {insert nod here} and then I will introduce y’all to the bloggers who I tagged to be a part of this on going (perpetual even) Blog HOP with a Difference

If y’all don’t know (why not) I do Mixed Media and that pretty much covers it. I’m free to use whatever I chose at any given moment or to use what I have in a manner to achieve what I envision or what I’m led to (that means what my hands and or eyes like). I just never quite know what I will use on a canvas or a journal page for that matter. For poetry I use a pencil or a pen and some kind of paper (could be a napkin or a sticky or copy paper) lol I mean Mixed Media is as diverse and as eclectic as I am (lol those words mean the same thing – sorta). Fun Stuff y’all

Ok here we go,

How does my creative / writing process work? LoL sometimes it’s a surprise even to me. I never know what will inspire me to create a piece of Art or a Poem for that matter. Sometimes one comes from the other and the other way ‘round. When an idea implants in my head (a word, quote, color, image, scene, concept) I will sometimes mull it over (this includes writing / sketching down the general idea) other times I have to do it right now. I mostly gather what I think I’ll use and then proceed getting busy with it. I have a hard time limiting what I can use or the way in which it was “meant” to be used. When I get in the zone, that’s where everything else in RL (real life) falls away and it’s just me and what I’m doing, I loose myself, well my “worldly self” and I find the true me. Umm yeah, I’m an Intuitive Artist. . . I take my basic idea (a picture in my head or a concept / emotion / or just whatever moves me) and make that or something like it. LoL When I’m finished I feel blessed to see what my hands did while my mind wasn’t looking. Yes, that’s what it feels like anyway.

How does my work differ from others of the same genre? (I love saying that word - genre) That’s a good question. MixedMedia is a huge genre and I think everyone that does it is a bit different from anyone else. I think that some of me will show itself in my work somehow, for better or worse. And because no one else has lived my life experiences I can only do / show my experiences, expectations, visions and etc. Whew I’m glad y’all didn’t ask what my “Style” was, lol. I have never been good at doing something ‘Just like this’ or exactly like the rules say. . . lol, even if I try. I know lots of people say that and I believe it’s true for each of us. This means my colors, or material choices may not be what others use, or would have used. Therefore my work (?right?) . . perhaps it’s the symbols that I use that I’m not even aware of {shrug}. Oh and I “try” to be humorous sometimes (most of the time). I mean laughter and smiles (even the quirky ones) are just so, well they are just so full of life.

Why do I create / write what I do? That’s simple because I have to. I have found while examining my past (we all do that), at those times when I couldn’t create because of one thing or another, I was wonky, err my life felt wonky. And it took me a while to figure that out. You know that when I get to create, um when I let myself create something anything I’m a better person. Besides it makes me happy and what’s better for the world than one more happy person. (rhetorical question doesn’t need answering) – let yourself feel the happiness that IS in you.

What am I working on? LOL training a puppy mostly, but in the studio I am working on a series of Canvas Girls. Well that’s a bit of a mis direction, the girls are on, err will be on, heavy watercolor paper then they will find their way onto canvas board. And I’m also doing some stuff to exhibit at our local art Gallery – the Gallery at the Madeley Building, operated by Conroe Art League. Oh and don’t forget I’m making Videos my YouTube channel is ArtistPoetGirl. LoL pay no attention to those people who suggest or mention that I have an accent. . . I don’t hear it so it’s ... um well ok maybe I do have one. Lol but I don’t hear it.

Johnna of ScrappyCamperSisters; is a fun loving, caring person who alongside her sister (DarcieGlam) creates some of the neatest and most useful albums. Selfies

So my dear friend Dede sent me this really neat Crown recently and I love it. . . so much that I took some selfies of me posing with it (umm in front of it) and I think I'll use 'em in on an Art Journal page, yep so be looking for a video on that soon maybe next weekend'ish around the 15th ... so I'm thinking.

So why post these selfies here, cause I needed a new post and they are just as good as anything else, not to mention that it's like um my blog and I can post what I want. I have an ideaR for them so yeah I'm committing right here right now that I will use 'em.

I got my Zines sent in to Dede along with some other items of Drawling fame, she has given a couple away but there are a couple more, so be sure to subscribe to her UStream Coffee and Art in the Morning and watch it LIVE (if at all possible) so you have a chance to win something not only made by me but there are several peoples in our fine community that send in stuff for Dede to have drawlings for (Drawling means give a way)

Oh hello

Journal’age

This is how I wanted to show off ArteDar’s challenge this week, a bug or insect, but alas I didn’t get it finished until after the cut off time. Fortunately for me I at least got the dragonfly tweeted to @ArteDar.

A bit of background about this page: the face is from this year’s 29Faces in Feb #21. Dana and I talked about her expression and we both agree that she looked like she had just popped around a tree and found a cute bug, or maybe a bird. But because this was the bug/insect week I chose a dragonfly (love ‘em),

The background is a 12 x 12 scrapbook paper cut down to 8 ½ x 11, adhered onto cardstock. Tree trunk (or door however you look at it) is some Timmy card, the flowers are layered Tim Holtz tattered floral die; the leaves are (a gift from Dede that she had won but couldn’t use) Lawn Fawn die – stitched leaves die; the dragon fly is Elizabeth Craft Designs #712 die. Sweet girl is painted with acrylic craft paints.

And um yeah – Ta Dum

so I ordered a Patti Tolley Parrish Stencil from iStencils and as was promised in the unveiling stream I got a free stencil. (that offer is over sorry) But any who my order came really fast - thanks iStencils and Patti for the sweet free stencil. !! Love IT!!

I have finally gotten a little smart {just a little}and I made notes on some of the pulls and finished pieces, so I can sorta recreate 'em. LOL as if {but I did say sorta} I suppose that means I should make a journal / note book of sorts to put notes / example pulls in. {that would be smart} Because one day maybe I can be a little like Patti Tolley Parrish {I love how she says that}

now back to my, So anyways I got my Gelli on the other day and these are a few of my favorites from that session. I'm gonna number label 'em for references if you're interested. {If not I'll never know as long as you Don't tell me} Yes photo rich - Eye candy {for me} and maybe you too.

#1 has the same colors as #5 Except I added a layer

of Iridescent medium with a few drops of a bright orange wash

#2 Clean up pull after doing a Poppa* black on #1

I let the black dry then used a metallic Silver to do the clean up pull

#3 hubby called it Dinosaur skin; pale blue was lifted

from the Gelli plate with zig zag fun foam (stamped on #8)

let it dry then used pale tan as a clean up pull

#4 this is the page that I laid the stencils on to clean the paint

 from them, then added dot'age

#5 same colors as #1 only no iridescent or wash

#6 this is a 6 x 6 stencil that I used a few times

for an all over Poppa* 

#7 no special notes on this one {shrug} just like it

#8 bottom layer is ghost print (greens) from the crackle stencil

next layer is pale blue stamped ziz zag fun foam from #3

the Poppa* is 6 x 6  Outback Bullseye repeated

*Poppa is a term first used by Patti {as far as I know) for adding a Pop of black. This Poppa can really zest up a print.

I also really like my Brayer Off pages. That's what I call the process of rolling the excess paint off the brayer {thus cleaning the brayer}

Week 3 Jess Challenge

card - Banner - use a banner of some sort

So I did. After a funny caption / sentiment / whatever popped in head. . . it was funny in there and now I'll share it cause you might think I'm funny in there too...

Front has: Caution washi Tape from TopazPearleGirl (Julie IKTNYLN aka Julie) and I cut a weird little banner flag thing with a banner flag thing to go on top of that they are on a pole (tooth pick I flattened on one side) . . .  Think BLOWING IN THE WIND people . . . blowing in the wind

Inside has the punch line sentiment

The background card is stenciled with a pale aqua and some clear embossing -both haphazardly. It was fun, what can I say - sucker / glutton for punishment BUT the caption came first. It didn't' take two days to think it up. LoL

Ok so now back to wife'ly duties - have to cook some food'age

Another Face Date

FaceS #22, #23 and #24. . . why oh why, can you tell me WHY I insisted on trying to paint another teeny tiny face'age? Ack!!! and um Yuck'age... Bless her heart in a southern sort of way.

I sorta have a journal page plan for these ^^^ ladies, but who knows the long and skinny of it verses the short LoL {inside my head joke}

now onto Face #25

I like the long neck on her {shrug} ^^^ and her wide eyed'ness. And how about those dimples LOL wonder if they will be in the final paintN.

and Face #26 drawn and painted {for the most part} during The-Frugal-Eclectic ' s uStream on the 26th. Joyce's streams are so entertaining, not only for the chat company, but for Joyce'age and her unique wonderful Art.

Again by a post on PaperArtsy, this time by Julie Ann Lee. Loved her tag with a Face and Key and little bits of 3D’age. She also did the cutest little suitcase / box.

Any way here is my Tag’age as inspired by Julie

The tiny face is about the size of a dime, it is paper clay I pushed in a “push” mold. I painted it – OMGeee can I say tiny {crazy}. The Key is a brad and I have some store bought ephemera {I just love clearance of a clearance} with that “clearance” thing said I am determined NOT to buy stuffs until I use up most of what I already have {unless I find clearance of a clearance}

how y’all Can’t paint a face – Can’t draw a face! !um I bet cya can!

This is a follow up to Face #4 (on the tag) I did for a challenge over on PaperArtsy. The guest Artist was Clare Lloyd and she shared a neat and I found VERY FUN way to do Whimsy Faces. And I, yes I Double Dog Dare ya to go take a look at her “Anybody”method!!!

Here is my beginnings

And here are my finished faces {#7 & 8} They are happily planted on Tags.

They are done the same way, from the exact same template (self-made stencil) Yet they look fairly different. This was accomplished by a few minor changes in the mouth, eyes and position / angle of the head. I have kept the positive negative cut out portion of the neck/shoulders and head. I can use them to trace out tops and maybe hats {if I were to get funky with it}

Again this IS a VERY Fun and Easy Easy way to get a finished face. Thanks Clare for sharing this tech and thanks PaperArtsy for having her over.

so far, with the tag as the exception, these are draw on 4 1/2 x 6" watercolor paper. I have used a Combo Circle template by Staedtler for the beginnings of their bodies and heads. I wanted them fairly uniform. 

Be sure to check out PaperArtsy 's Weekly Challenge - because WE all need to be challenged; it's what keeps our minds forming new synapsis / brain neurons / y'all know the thinks that make the grey matter perk up - finding new connections between the 3D world and the spiritual creative beings that we truly are.

New Orleans

Louisiana, it had been 10 years since we were there {honeymoon #1} Johnny had the opportunity to go to the NADA convention in New Orleans. So away we drove and drove and drove and drove, normally a 6 hour trip but due to the ice closings it was 10 ½. Whole E Muragatron! was my bladder ever tired {insert awkward face} 

I had a great time and I met a super Artist, Alex Beck. See at some of these conventions they have other things for the spouses to do and see and I sure scored. Anywho, Johnny spotted him first and was almost finished getting his portrait done when I found him. 

WoW. So yeah, as a matter of fact I had to get mine done too, otherwise I would have been all jelly and stuff and we can’t have that. Alex does fine art and you can find him and his work here.

Alex was there drawing portraits using only 2 colors of pastel on grey paper. He may not be a huge fan of using pastels but he sure handles them with precision; Acrylic paints and oils are his preference.

Now let me tell you he had his cards out on a table, y’all know the kind, information on one side and copies of art work on the other. Yeah, my first question was how many cards may I have. LoL Then Alex asked if I could take no more than 3, ack! LoL Carp!! How to pick JUST three? I mean I understand he only had so many cards with him, but really {insert Oh MY No face}. So I picked my 3 very carefully and it was so hard to do. {sigh}

And then I told him that I knew a lot of people {that would be Y’all} and that Y’all would check out his stuff online. So do it, yes do it now {please} I also mentioned to him that if he had a product y’all would definitely click on his link. Alex said, “Product?” and I said, ‘Yeah, like a #2 pencil or something, they like buying stuff.” LoL His product is his work.

So go see him, not just cause I say so but because if he can {and he so did} make me look this good

He deserves a few ^5s and besides I don't want y'all to make me out a lair. {nope} And Alex if you are reading this thanks again for my art and for humoring this 34 year old girl. {am so}

Washi Tape

And because one thing can lead to another and Well there I was in my studio one cold icy day. I picked up the empty cracker box and thought ‘Hey this could be a washi tape storage thingie.’

So I reinforced the outside edge with silver duct tape. I then measured {sort of} the depth and cut some cardboard to that {sorta} measure. Made my marks where I wanted the dowels (more on them below) punched the holes and slotted down to the holes on one side*. I lined the inside edge with old scrapbook card and this also added reinforcement to the sides and the dowel spots. I added more silver tape to cover up the thicker ugly edge view.

For the dowels I used straws cut to length and to strengthen them I inserted skewers. I was inspired to use skewers from the CJS2014 video by Mary Beth Shaw, Jan 25

I may need another box or two

We Circle

Yep this is another CreativeJumpStart2014 project and sponsor challenge Tonic Studios. I used household items and a technique shown by Samie Harding for this Project #8 and it was a few days in coming. 

I was inspired by the journal spreads shared on Donna Downeys blog from week 1 of her 48 weeks workshop. Yeah liking the bricks… so I took a leftover strip of watercolor paper, used WC crayons, then dry embossed with a brick folder, went over the strip with white gesso and then with a bit more red and black WC crayon. Dry embossed again to get more of a haphazard brick thing going on. This strip sat on my side bar for a day or so.

Meanwhile I wanted to do something for a CJS2014 using cardboard, so I grabbed an empty zip lock bag corrugated box {bulk buy} and trimmed it down so I could die cut the Townscape on the Edge (TimHoltz). And then thought ‘Now what?’ so I tossed them aside, they ended up near the above Brick strip.

And I made a couple of other projects here and here and all of a sudden the light bulb twinkled and I knew I wanted to try Samie Harding’s Transparencies & Painted circles from Jan 22^nd. {cause maybe} 

OOOOO my head goes ‘where’s the strip o’brick & those townscape houses?’ {found} I trimmed them to 3 ½ x 2 ½ “ ATC size.

I have a stash of pre-cut packaging that I use to reinforce my ATCs, so I glued them onto the brick fronts and went ahead and glued on my printed ATC backs {cause peoples need to know who made ‘em}. While those were drying . . .

I found some plastic from discarded packaging; on one I used a black sharpie to make a swirl before I painted it. On all except one color I used my fingers {WEEEE finger painting}. Oh and one is really a piece of leftover scrapbook paper {the yellow ‘un} I sat those aside and broke out a little pocket dictionary, and cut out some choice definitions.

By this time my painted plastic was dry so I cut out my circles of various sizes and um yeah most some are not so “circle”. I layered my fancy Samie Circles, some shinny side up some not. I thick tacky glued them onto the brick ATC backgrounds, added my dictionary papers and Bam Ah Lam Ah Voila!
